“Impossible to pigeonhole, Wiley can generate blowtorch heat in just about any context” — San Jose Mercury News“Aubrey Johnson boldly breaks the rules” — Downbeat Magazine
Winner of the Gunther Schuller Medal, winner of awards from Downbeat Magazine for “Best Jazz Vocalist” and “Outstanding Performance by a Jazz Vocalist”, performer on two GRAMMY-winning albums, New York based Aubrey Johnson has recorded on more than 40 albums and performed with such artists as Bobby McFerrin, Billy Childs, Lyle Mays, Janis Siegel (of Manhattan Transfer), Fred Hersch’s Pocket Orchestra, Brian Carpenter’s Ghost Train Orchestra, Sara Serpa, John Zorn’s Mycale Vocal Quartet, Joe Phillips’ Numinous Ensemble, Andrew Rathbun’s Large Ensemble, Rose and the Nightingale, Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra, Jason Yeager, and Randy Ingram.
Equally adept at delivering wordless melodic lines like a virtuoso horn player and interpreting profound lyrics with emotional acuity, Abrey’s album of original compositions for jazz sextet, “Unraveled” was reviewed by Downbeat Magazine as offering “a dramatic journey through her intriguing aesthetic.” Musical Memoirs said that the album offers “fresh, innovating music by a singer whose voice defies category and who reinvests herself on each individual tune. Her distinctive sound is unlike any I have heard.”
Aubrey’s album “Play Favorites” is a collaboration with pianist Randy Ingram. All About Jazz gave the record four stars and said it is “formidable” and that “the gauzy warmth of Johnson’s voice and the bright sparkle of Ingram’s piano make a wonderful team”.
SummerJazz is proud to be funding a special grant to Aubrey Johnson for new compositions to be included in her soon to her coming next album.
