About the Event:
Chopsticks Alley Art cordially invites you to the staged reading workshop of Tales of Ancient Vietnam, a new play with music by Vinh G. Nguyen, commissioned and produced by Chopsticks Alley Art. This workshop features the latest script, original music by Emmy-winning Composer Van-Anh Vanessa Vo, and puppets by desinger Simon Trumble. Guests are invited to view Chopsticks Alley’s current art exhibition “Under One Moon” before and after the event.
About the Play:
Tales of Ancient Vietnam is a new play with music, intended for a multigenerational audience. It follows the journey of Lan, a second-generation, Vietnamese American, as she discovers her cultural identity and heritage through a series of beloved Vietnamese folktales told by her Ông Bà Nội (grandparents).The wildly imaginative script spotlights an empowering AAPI youth experience, while weaving in Southeast Asian history, culture, and traditions through vibrant music, dance, and puppetry.
About the Playwright:
Vinh G. Nguyen is a multi-faceted theatre director, educator, and arts administrator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of his recent theatrical projects include: Private Lives (A.C.T.), Little Shop of Horrors (TheatreWorks), Allegiance (Palo Alto Players), Company (South Bay Musical Theatre) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Cabrillo Stage). Vinh has taught theatre at San Jose State, San Diego State, and Las Positas College. He holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University.
