Downtown San Jose’s History
Since Santa Clara County’s beginnings as an agricultural region, San Jose has been the economic and cultural hub of the area. Downtown was at the very center of this action, with many shops and residences. The city’s face changed in the 1950s with the invention of the first computer disks and the centralization of the South Bay in this new industry. Much of the old town of San Jose, including nearly all of Downtown, was demolished to give way to this newfound suburbia. Protests in the 1970s ー criticizing the city’s rapid outward expansion ー caught the attention of city leaders, and the city’s priorities soon changed to develop downtown San Jose into the center of Silicon Valley. From these efforts, Downtown San Jose became the urban center it is today.
